The Cuckoo’s Calling -A Review

16160797

Hi Steffibun!

I FINALLY finished The Cuckoo’s Calling last weekend…only 2 months to read it, not bad. It was over 400 pages, making it the longest book I’ve read since Harry Potter. I enjoyed reading it a lot; it’s a mystery crime novel and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed Nancy Drew. I tried not to think of who actually wrote it as I read, but I do know that helped me through some parts…Jo must have a great ending so I have to keep going. Don’t worry, no spoilers here. I was both surprised and mildly disappointed in the ending. Surprised because I honestly didn’t see it coming, but I am very bad at predicting the outcome of such stories even though I watch lots of CASTLE. Disappointed because I was surprised for all of half a second until the effect wore off.

I was a fan of the foreshadowing that I didn’t know was there until it was all revealed at the end. It had a OHHHHHHH-esque feeling to it that I’ve been missing since Harry Potter, though it was nothing of that caliber.

So I am definitely glad I read it, but I’m excited to read something more fantastical next. Which is why I am currently reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! It’s very short and I plan on reading the illustrated HP afterwards so I can catch up on the challenge.

Ramen!

Hi Keddahbean and cheese,

I didn’t know what to post today – so thank you for suggesting that I post my ramen recipe!

Andrew and I have been eating this a ton lately. It’s so cheap and delicious and you could make it in a million ways.

Start by boiling a broth of your choice, we use Veggie Broth, and get it to a boil. While it’s getting hot – chop your veggies. We typically use cabbage, carrots, green onions and spinach. Chop the tofu too (I wouldn’t know what to do if you were using real meat but you could easily omit tofu if you don’t like it). Once it’s boiling – put in your packet of ramen for two minutes. Season your broth with black pepper, garlic powder and chili flakes.

At the two minute mark, throw in all your veggies and cook for a minute to a minute and a half more.

Pour into a giant bowl, add some soy sauce to taste and Viola! Delicious!

❤

Ps I don’t know what page of my book I’m on but I haven’t read any since I left your house. I read some Sunday with you, but not much. I’ll be better this week – promise!

Hi Steffibun! I loved your last post, I really need to take care of my face like you do yours. I’m not sure I have the stomach to pay for some of those products though, haha. Anyway, I don’t feel like typing much so I just want to show you a few things I’ve been obsessed with lately.

Updated Skincare Routine AM/PM

Hi Keddahbbien and Cheese,

I haven’t done an updated skincare routine in a long time and I’m feeling very proud of my new setup so let us begin! First: a Key!

No star: The brand is cruelty free!

*: Brand is not cruelty free and will be replaced by a cruelty free option once the product is used up!

**: Prescription – which most certainly is not cruelty free – which I will not replace because prescription.

***: I’m unsure if the company is or is not cruelty free because I’ve heard contradicting reports. I will either do more research when the time comes to replace the product or buy something I know is cruelty free.

Night:

  • Remove any makeup with Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover* or Sephora Collection Tripple Action Cleansing Water*
  • Cleanse with CeraVe***
  • Tone with Pixi Glow Tonic
  • Treat with Aczone Gel 5%**
  • Moisturize with Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil
  • Moisturize my eye area with Ole Henriksen Ultimate Eye Lift Creme***
  • Exfoliate with Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment

Day:

  • Cleanse with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser*
  • Tone with Pixi Glow Tonic
  • Treat with Aczone Gel 5%**
  • Moisturize with Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil
  • Moisturize eye area with Ole Henriksen Ultimate Eye Lift Creme***
  • Protect with Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++* (Sadly, this company was just bought by Unilever, making it no longer cruelty free)
  • Protect eye area with Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector SPF 30*

I’m really loving this set up. I feel so pampered and I can tell it’s making a difference to my skin.

Maybe I’ll try and make a skincare video to show you how I use them all!

Ps current reading A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness pg 15

Pps my new day is Saturday!

25 Things Every HP Fan Did Before Deathly Hallows Was Released

Hi Steffibun,

Last night I saw Andrew Sim’s post from Buzzfeed “25 Things Every Harry Potter Fan Did Before Deathly Hallows Was Released” and I said YASSS to so many of them I wanted to show you with my own pictures.

#1. You obsessively reread every book, combing for information you might have missed on the previous read through.
This is obvious.

#2. To the point where all your books looked like this.

20160315_184729.jpg

I barely dare open this one because the spine has split.

#3. Midnight book releases were your jam.
207497_4914833390_2714_n206357_4914863390_6654_n.jpg

#5. And you definitely slept on the street at least once for a movie premiere, if you were close enough to one.

#6. Your bedroom was wallpapered with posters from the films.
Cue Harry Potter wall from baby Kara’s bedroom!

#7. In fact, your whole room was a shrine dedicated to the series.

Yes I hung a wand from my ceiling.

229320_5893018390_5871_n.jpg

I took a 6 foot holographic poster from a theater.

#8. You’d spend hours clicking through J.K. Rowling’s website trying to find clues.
This was my life during Christmas break!

#9. And Mugglenet was your homepage so you’d be up to date 100% of the time.
It is still my homepage..

#10. Movie marathons were a common occurrence at your house.
Correction, they ARE.

#11. And of course, you’d accompany the films with themed snacks.
We made pumpkin pasties and butterbeer for our Harry Potter class in college.

#12. You bought any kind of merchandise you could get your hands on.
221675_5893308390_3747_n

#13. You spent hours assembling intricate Hogwarts Lego sets.
No. But playing the Lego Harry Potter games, yes.

#15. You frequently visited dumbledoreisnotdead.com, reading so far into every theory that came along.
Also the unplottables LiveJournal.

#16. You got super into role playing on various online forums.
Hogwarts Is Home LiveJournal!! Also, Neopets guilds, so many Neopets guilds.
x-all-the-things-template

#17. After Half-Blood Prince came out, you theorised non-stop about Snape’s loyalties.
Whilst in tears.
omg sad.gif

#18. You spent a lot of time writing or reading unhealthy levels of fanfiction.
Harry Potter and the Amulet of Time! ❤

#19. You listened to Mugglecast so much that you got to the point where you considered Andrew, Ben, Kevin, Eric, Micah, and all the rest of the gang to be your friends.
They’re all I listened to during long vacation car rides to Mexico and California.

#20. If you lived in the right area, you went to all the fan conventions.
Or not, I went to one in Florida.

LeakyCon 2011

#21. And if you lived too far or your parents didn’t let you go, you’d just look at photos on the internet and be sad.
I remember when I missed out on Azkatraz.

#22. You made so many online friends who shared your undying love for the series.
Just friends in general. You know who you are.

#23. If you weren’t in a Wrock band, you sure listened to a lot of it.

#25. But mainly, your time was spent waiting impatiently for the next book release, so you could devour it in a few hours and repeat the whole cycle.

Disney Surveys (WITH GIFS) and Excitement

Hi Keddah,

First order of business – I’M SEEING YOU THIS WEEKEND. We have not seen each other in a VERY LONG TIME LIKE MY WEDDING LONG TIME AND I’M SO EXCITED. And we get to go wedding dress shopping for our Jamie Money!

This may or may happen when I see you. Why is Ben accurately portraying Andrew in this scene?

Second, I’m on page 232 of The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. It’s good. It’s very predictable, it’s very sweet. It’s about the Not Pretty Bookish Girl™ who moves to a Podunk Town™ and meets a Handsome But Distant And Very Attractive Guy™. It’s not a book that’s going to change your life, but it’s a good, predictable chick lit and there’s something nice about that. I haven’t read one of these in a while and I forgot how nice they can be.

Third, I FOUND A DISNEY SURVEY THAT I DID TODAY IN 2009 AND HERE IT IS. I’ve edited my answers below each of Baby Steffi’s answers.

Loki Fairy Costume Progress

Hi Steffi,

I’m really busy working on my costume for the ren fair this weekend! I’m improving my Loki fairy costume and though I’m sad you probably won’t be joining us, I thought you’d like to see some progress photos!

I’m hand sewing some gold ribbon to my corset that I’ve had for a few years.

image

I covered my headband in worbla so I can better attach the horns. I’ve still got to sand and paint it.

image

I was so excited to finally get a dressform! A fabric shop is closing here so I ran to get one. I can’t tell you how much it has helped, I love it!

I can’t wait to see you this weekend! 😄
