My Simple Makeup Routine

Hi Beans!

I missed your stream today and I feel very guilty! But we had an incredibly productive and busy day!

J&L are here with us for the weekend so we started our day at Chompies (Andrew’s favorite new breakfast place thanks to you), went to Hobby Lobby, where I got a shadow box for my Tsum Tsums, HomeGoods, where we got some bedding stuff and a new cat tree, DSW for Joseph’s fancy weddding shoes, and finally Nick’s to pick up Joseph’s suit. Then we came home and rearranged the spare bedroom because our new bedroom furniture comes in on Monday! I’ve stupidly forgot to take before and after pics so YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO DEAL.

I knew I was going to be running around a lot today so I wanted a fresh and simple makeup look.

Skin Inc. Serum Review

Hi Keddahbean and Cheese.

img_3220

The three serums I purchased in the bundle are Vitamin C (Rebalance and Tackle Pores – but also Vitamin C boosts the effects of all products applied after Vitamin C. This is especially important for SPF!), Licorice (Calm Irritated Skin), and French Pine Bark (Antioxidant Protection – which helps to prevent aging from free radical and UV damage). The three serums in the sample were Vitamin A (Even Tone and Reduce Dark Circles), Hyaluronic Acid (Long Lasting Hydration) and Chlorella (Brighten and Tackle Spots).

First I will let Sephora describe the product to you:

Patented Japanese seaweed encapsulation technology allows for an effective delivery of pure, potent ingredients, while the humectant-rich base delivers lasting hydration. Layer individually or blend with up to two additional Skin Inc. customizable serums to provide optimal results and create a powerful, multipurpose product.

Now, I want to talk to you about Skin Inc and their Custom Serums. But I feel like to talk about the good, I need to start here:

The Bad: I purchased the My Daily Dose Custom-Blended Serum Set from Sephora on 7/7. This kit allows you to get 3 full size Custom Serums and a Serum Bottle for $90.00. You essentially get one Serum and the Serum Bottle for free. I think this is a spectacular deal. But I’ll be done with the product by the end of this month if not sooner. And I stopped using it day and night about a week ago. $90.00 for a product that lasts less than 45 days – I don’t know how I feel about that. It could be 100% my fault but I am having a hard time recommending the product or deciding if I will repurchase simply because of this. But, knowing that, let me get into the MANY positives of this product.

img_3219

The Good: There are so many I need to break them down.

Customer Service: I contacted their customer service to find out if this is a cruelty free brand. I sent this email on 7/7 at 10:03am.

Hello. Do you test on animals, at any point during the production of your products? Are your ingredients tested on animals by your suppliers? Do you test on animals when required by law? Are you owned by another company? Thank you!

They responded with this email on 7/7 at 10:57am.

Hello Stephanie,
Thank you for your inquiry.  I am happy to share that Skin Inc is a cruelty-free brand, and that we do not currently sell into China, or any other countries which require animal testing.  Skin Inc does not acquire ingredients from third parties who conduct animal testing.  Our company is privately held so we are not affiliated with any other brands which conduct different practices than what I have outlined here.
I hope that you find this information helpful; please don’t hesitate to reach out with any further questions.
Cheers to awesome skin!
Kind regards,
Brie
  1. Fast and amazing customer service.
  2. Kind and detailed response
  3. Cruelty free line!
This is the kind of company I want to support!
The Product: This is a really incredible product. First, it’s a fun product. It had a very apothecary feel and I love that. I loved mixing the three bottles into one – I loved the bottle itself – the whole thing. I loved the targeted aspect of this product. It’s awesome that you can use balancing serums where you need it, cell turnover serums on dark spots or healing breakouts, and vitamin C for balancing all over.

Also, it’s an educational product. The three serums I purchased plus the three I received as samples from Sephora informed me about my skin in ways I wasn’t expecting. I have dry skin? Well of course I do. I live in the hottest state in the nation, I use acne products, and I don’t drink nearly enough water. OF COURSE I need moisturizing products. So when I started using the Hyaluronic Acid all over, my skin perked up and my breakouts lessened.

Lastly, I truly feel that this product has changed my skin.

Overall: I think I would recommend this product to people who are very interested in skincare. I also think that I will repurchase the kit – but I think I will change the serums. I think I can drop the Vitamin C and replace it with a Vitamin C serum by another company (I’m looking at you, Drunk Elephant). I will keep the French Pine Bark for sure because duh. And, I think I will keep my products separate so that I can do more area correcting vs all over correcting.

I think this was my most educational skincare post so far. I hope you liked learning about my little apothecary bottles as much as I loved using and learning about them.
HAVE THE VERY BESTEST DAY KARA & FRIENDS.
((And you better, Kara, because I’m at your house RIGHT NOW))

San Diego Makeup Bag

Hi Karabean and Cheese,

I wanted to show you what I brought in my makeup bag for a week in San Diego. I think you you will be very impressed.

All makeup related things. I brought my two largest eyeshadow palettes simply because I had the room and didn’t feel like breaking them down into a smaller one. Top are my Inglot shadows and bottom are my Makeupgeek ones.

The cat bag holds all my makeup brushes. This bag once held a sleep shirt and I don’t think my mom expected me to get more use out of the bag it came in. But it’s great! The best part is – I can bleach it. No contaminants!

And what we all came to see…

Bronzer, eyeliner, translucent powder, blush, two lippies, two mascaras, two concealers. You will notice that there’s no foundation. And you would be correct. I’ve completely stopped wearing the stuff and I think my face is happier for it.

I can’t wait to see you next weekend! And I will make sure to tell you about either the Mistborn trilogy or those serum potions next week!

New Skincare

Hi Bean!

I got a couple new skincare things because I had a 10% coupon at Sephora for spending too much money there. Sounds right. Here’s what I got!

I repurchase a full size of the Luna Night Oil by Sunday Riley and picked up their new Tidal cream to replace Artemis. Turns out, Artemis wasn’t really my thing. I also purchased Dr. Dennis Gross’s mineral sun spray and a Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light.

I feel like I can talk to you about three of these items, but the Tidal review is going to need to wait. I like it a lot – but it takes about 30 days to know if a product is working its magic. I can say I like it a lot though after 4 days of use (morning and night.

The Luna Oil is a must for me. This is my third .oz since I bought it for the first time in December. It’s a lovely oil and I hope you give it another shot!

The spray sun screen by Dr. Dennis Gross is really nice. I spray two squirts (I dislike the word squirt) into my hand and rub it on my face. It’s slippy in consistency and it’s a physical sunscreen so I’m liking it a lot! No breakouts and I don’t feel gross when I use it.

The Hourglass power is a repurchase but in a more yellow color. I stopped wearing foundation so I just put this all over after I’ve concealed and I like it a lot. Hourglass is one of my favorite cruelty free brands!

Lastly, this monstrosity. The waterproof Better Than Sex mascara by Too Faced. You and I both hated the regular version because it swam down our face by the end of the day. Well this one does it too. Usually waterproof formulas don’t do this so I was very excited. Too excited. My dreams were dashed.

PS you’re currently sitting on my couch, talking to your dogs and husband (mostly your dogs). We had such a nice day today, going to Sephora and Ulta and seeing Ariel(!!) and getting Dutch Bros and in a few hours we’re going to leave to go to the midnight release of HP! Yay! Yay for good days ❤

Shopping Spree: Daiso

Hi Karabean and Cheese,

I wanted to show you what I got and saw from Daiso, a Japanese Dollar Store chain in the LA area (we went to the one in Orange/Anaheim).

Powder puff, face masks, piggie timer (cuz duh), cute tabs

Eyelash carrier and eyelashes

I’m excited to start trying these!

And here are some things that I saw but didn’t buy.

It was very hard not to buy this for you, Bean

D:

I had so much fun exploring this place and I can’t wait to go back soon!

Inglot Haul

Hi Karabean!

I bought a few new eyeshadows when we were in Vegas last weekend!

I needed some lighter shades to round out my Inglot collection so that was my goal!

in order: 467, 612, 393, 312, & 52

First: Inglot shadows have glitter mixed in with their pigments – this glitter barely transfers to the finished product, but allows for better blendability.

467 is a gorgeous neutral beige with a slight glitter.

612 is a light peach color with a slight glitter.

393 is almost identical to 612 in color but it has a wonderful golden sheen on it (no glitter)

312 is a lovely pinky peach color – similar to Makeupgeek’s Mango Tango

52 is a nice neutral brown with golden glitter.

Yay new shadows! I can’t wait to play with these!

Updated Skincare Routine AM/PM

Hi Keddahbbien and Cheese,

I haven’t done an updated skincare routine in a long time and I’m feeling very proud of my new setup so let us begin! First: a Key!

No star: The brand is cruelty free!

*: Brand is not cruelty free and will be replaced by a cruelty free option once the product is used up!

**: Prescription – which most certainly is not cruelty free – which I will not replace because prescription.

***: I’m unsure if the company is or is not cruelty free because I’ve heard contradicting reports. I will either do more research when the time comes to replace the product or buy something I know is cruelty free.

Night:

  • Remove any makeup with Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover* or Sephora Collection Tripple Action Cleansing Water*
  • Cleanse with CeraVe***
  • Tone with Pixi Glow Tonic
  • Treat with Aczone Gel 5%**
  • Moisturize with Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil
  • Moisturize my eye area with Ole Henriksen Ultimate Eye Lift Creme***
  • Exfoliate with Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment

Day:

  • Cleanse with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser*
  • Tone with Pixi Glow Tonic
  • Treat with Aczone Gel 5%**
  • Moisturize with Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil
  • Moisturize eye area with Ole Henriksen Ultimate Eye Lift Creme***
  • Protect with Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++* (Sadly, this company was just bought by Unilever, making it no longer cruelty free)
  • Protect eye area with Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector SPF 30*

I’m really loving this set up. I feel so pampered and I can tell it’s making a difference to my skin.

Maybe I’ll try and make a skincare video to show you how I use them all!

Ps current reading A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness pg 15

Pps my new day is Saturday!

Skin Care

Hello Karibbean,

I’m going to talk your ear off a bit about skincare. This post comes to you in a few excessively worded parts.

After buying the Luna Night Oil by Sunday Riley (post here), and seeing such a huge difference in what a quality/expensive product can do for my skin, I’ve really become more interested in taking care of my skin and choosing products that are both good for me and good for our little furry friends.

Sunday Riley’s products are made in the USA, they don’t have a parent company, and are 100% cruelty free (and some products are vegan, I believe). I say they don’t have a parent company for reasons: NYX is a “cruelty free” brand, but they’re owned by Loreal, which is a shitty company that likes testing on bunnies. When you purchase anything from NYX, a portion of those profits are going to benefit Loreal. And that sucks.

I really like this website for checking to see if a brand is cruelty free: Cruelty Free Kitty. I just found out, because of them, that REN – a well known prestige, cruelty free skin care brand – was just bought out by a bad parent company. NOT COOL.

I just bought Sunday Riley’s Artemis Oil as a day moisturizer and I’m planning on purchasing Dr. Dennis Gross’s (another cruelty free brand!) mineral SPF spray to layer on top of that. I’m excited for this new skincare journey I’m about to embark on!

Here’s to looking a subtle 30 when I’m 63!

Part two: A review.

yes, that’s a harvey butt

I bought a cleansing oil at TJ Maxx not too long ago called Coast to Coast Ultra Soothing Cleansing Oil – Grapefruit and Geranium. This product is kind of what spurred on my interest in buying better skincare because this product is 1) cheap and 2) sucky. It does the job of getting off my makeup but it made me break out in these little surface bumps – some of which had nothing inside them. I wouldn’t suggest this product and it is going to find a home in my trash.

Part three: I know I’m late to post this, but I had a really weird day yesterday. I will explain why in a private post to you. I’m going to do it as a private post because 1) it’s personal 2) I want to keep this blog as an honest account of what’s going on in my life but I’m not super comfortable sharing the negatives with the world yet because 3) I’m really bad at doing what Margaret Atwood describes as telling the truth slant. I have a very hard time talking about things in a kind way if they make me upset. But hopefully, the more I try – the better  I will become.

That’s it for me! To the furthest star and back,

PS halfway through this post, derpy decided he wanted to sit between me and the computer and I tried to get a Photo Booth picture but IT DIDN’T WORK AND NOW I’M SAD.

PPS books! I finished Voyage of the Basilisk, the third book in the Lady Trent series and it was SO GOOD. I don’t know what book I will move onto next, but if I don’t start one by next week, give me a mini punishment. Which is something I think we should do.

Luna

Hi Kara,

I wasn’t going to talk about this. It was just going to be our dirty little secret from the night before my wedding but you know what?? IT’S THE MOST AMAZING THING AND I WONT BE ASHAMED.

I’m talking, of course, about my shameful purchase of Luna Night Oil by Sunday Riley.

Let’s just get this out in the open. This 1oz bottle is $105.00. That’s a lot of money. In the skincare world, it’s not really that bad, but that’s like 40 trips to Taco Bell. But…

I’ve noticed a HUGE difference in my skin since using this product in conjunction with my other skincare. First, I’m not breaking out. I have my occasional period zits of doom, but even when I get those, the spots dissapear within a week – something that would normally take my very fair skin at least a month to deal with. My skin seems more balanced and even in tone. I can’t get enough of this stuff and I know that I will be repurchasing.

A couple things to note: this product has a very herbally scent. I like it a lot but it could be off putting. It also has two dyes added to the product, which I don’t really understand or like but my skin isn’t bothered by them, clearly. This product contains the highest level of retinol that is available over the counter – which can be drying to the skin. Retinol promotes cell turnover and is very happy making to your skin. As an oily skinned person, I have no trouble using this on a nightly basis and I find that it’s helping to dry me out a bit, which is something I need, but people with dryer skin might want to use a product like this every 2-3 days.

Here is my unmakeuped face. Ohhhh. Aaaahhhh.

airport selfie!

Thanks for keeping my secret, Kara, but it was too good not to share.

PS it’s my birthday! Happy birthday to me!

To the furthest star and back,
