April 5: Dyed eggs and had a delicious dinner with my family. Me and Kyle played Goof Troop while Grayson was the peanut gallery. “Hands down Goofy!”
April 15: Went to the Welcome to Night Vale show. So crazy seeing Cecil speak!

August 11: Indiana vacation! Went tubing on the lake and Kyle lost his suit. “I lost everything!”
August 15: Happy birthday Grayson! We went to Melissa’s wedding and had a bonfire where Kyle drank too much beer and failed Kevin’s sobriety tests haha.
October 10: Woke up at 4:30am to drive to Vegas with Steffi & Andrew.
October 23: Flew to LA, I booked a creepy hotel so we stayed at the fancy wedding hotel instead. Katie & Andrew’s rehearsal dinner ❤
November 22: Went to the Bengals/Cardinals game, I saw 2 touchdowns right in front of me! I had a sore throat from all the yelling.
December 2: Drove to Disneyland on a bus for Steffi’s wedding! It takes 3 Disney movies to get there.

Another 4 Disney trips last year. How many did you do?

A Migraine Saga Part 2

Read part 1 here.

After my one glorious month of no headaches whatsoever, the next few months were quite different. I had at least one headache every week and 4 migraines over a 14 week period. I was starting to get desperate again, but I really didn’t want to go back on propranolol until I had exhausted every other option. So I tried a few more things.

Massage therapy
A co-worker really suggested I try this as it helped her when she used to get migraines. Let me tell you, these are wonderful. My therapist focused mainly on my neck and shoulders, as apparently I was very tense. She told me the benefits of fixing my posture, taking breaks at the computer and maintaining a lower level of stress. We also discussed how my body runs warm and how my face turns beat red when I exercise. I’d really benefit from ice packs on my neck and shoulders after working out and during my massages. Keeping that area from tensing up as it could be preventing normal blood flow and could be causing my headaches. I went a few times, once during a migraine and it was alleviated soon afterword. She then recommended going to a chiropractor also.

I was so terrified of going to get all my bones cracked, but I went and had my consult done.

Those are the xrays they took. Obviously I have some slight curvature of my spine, haha. He also pointed out that my neck is quite straight with a tilt forward and it’s probably from me hunching and looking down. This probably doesn’t help my tense shoulders so I went a couple times a week for a month and I ended up loving it, even the neck cracking. I tried my best to stay relaxed and take breaks to stretch my shoulders. I had fewer migraines, but just as many headaches and they began to cluster. I was getting 2-3 a week, every other week.

Then my chiropractor asked about my poop. Don’t be embarrassed, we’re all friends here. I confessed that sometimes I go 3 days without pooping and that my idea of eating vegetables was “eating a salad a week.” He really suggested I try eating better and maybe taking some magnesium supplements to help regulate myself. I worked myself up to 500mg a day and I’ve been taking it ever since. I don’t know if it’s helping with the headaches, but I do poop everyday now!

Birth Control
I also stopped taking birth control. Last year, my doctor told me to try being on bc constantly, i.e. not have a period, since most of my headaches occurred either before, during, or after my period. I didn’t like this at all as I was constantly spotting and it was difficult obtaining enough Nuvarings to keep up with the schedule. So I stopped taking it altogether. Besides the other regular side effects of having a normal period, my headache patterns have not changed.

Where I’m at now
My headaches haven’t been as bad as they were last year; I still haven’t had more than one migraine a month. I have a few other things I can try including seeing a neurologist and trying “feverfew”. I have noticed that when I wake up with a headache on one side of my head, the sinus on that side is also stuffed up and I can usually get those to go away with sudefed. I don’t know if sinus problems have anything to do with headaches, but I wish all my my headaches were like that. So I’m at an okay place for now, but not as cured as I want to be.

The saga has now caught up with real time, so part 3 will happen eventually and hopefully it will be the last!

Teeny Tiny Chickens

Hi Kara,

A teeny tiny chicken. Who is cold.

I currently have teeny tiny chickens. Two weeks ago I had regular tiny chickens, but then I got a tiny tumor thing cut off the back of my mouth, and my body said “fuck those tiny chickens, SHE’S EXPERIENCING PAIN IN HER MOUTH AND SHE CAN’T HAVE COOKIES,” which is my body’s version of CODE RED.

So then I went to your house. Ludo preformed a seance on me and the microscopic tiny chickens, that had been lurking in my head for two weeks, decided to become massive evil tinychickens of death. They attacked my nose and my lungs and my ears and my ability to LIVE OR LOVE OR EXPERIENCE JOY.

So here are the things that have sparked the will to live in me and gave me hope for a brighter future.

Puffs Plus Lotion:

Kara, get these. If my nose so much as looks at another facial tissue, it becomes red and crusty. Which is what happened.

Trader Joes Salve of the Gods

Beyond saving my nose, this stuff has also saved my hands this winter. The skin on the sides of my hand (south of my pinky) cracks and bleeds. I put this on my hands before bed and my hands have been so pretty and soft. And it could be because I was preventative this year, but my nose looked a lot worse than my hands do and it cleared it up in two days. Plus, I get to scream I’VE GOT SALVE and chase Andrew around every night before bed.

Happy Drugs from the Happy Doctor

Sinus infections suck and so do possible ear infections because of your(my) already damaged ear drums.

Humidifier (or a pan on high heat boiling water continuously for hours)(yes, mom I was careful)(No, I didn’t burn the house down, obviously)(Stop, alright, Andrew bought me a real one because he didn’t want to CLR the pans anymore)

Andrew walked into the entryway after work and couldn’t breathe because I’d made it so moist. I really like moist air. And moist other things. Like cakes.

And lastly, Many, Many Blankets.

I’m currently under two with my laptop on top. And MacBooks are legendary for their crotch burning.

My hopes for the future (she says on her death bed), is that tomorrow I can pop both ears, I have fewer coughs that get up more tiny chickens, and my snot is crystal clear.

I would post pictures, but I’ve just taken my NyQuil. So all is lost.

To the furthest star and back,

P.S. You’re correct. No one has the ability to be as melodramatic as I am about colds.

P.P.S. I’m so melodramatic about colds, in fact, that I didn’t even mention my wedding in less than a week. My brain has one focus, and that is to focus on my imminent death via tiny chickens.

I am bad at things.

Hi Steffi, remember when I did a post about how I don’t adult well? This is sort of I Don’t Adult part two. I am so bad at things.

  1. I can’t be messy. A messy kitchen and clothes all over the floor make me anxious and I get cranky. I wish I would just relax and let it be sometimes!
  2. I don’t like talking to strangers. We went to get my car fixed and I didn’t want to talk to the person at the counter so I just handed him the keys and waited for Grayson to speak. I said, “You talk,” and the counter person said “You’re giving me a free truck?” Grayson laughed and thank god he started speaking.
  3. I do embarrassing things on accident. I bought someone’s coffee behind me in the drivethrough. The barista handed me my drink and then took my card. He gave my card back while holding the next person’s drink in his hand. Then I accidentally tried to take the other coffee. He stared at me weird and just said, “You already got yours.” I really think he thought I was trying to take their drink. So much for that good deed feeling.
  4. I can’t talk on the phone. Not only do I not like to, but I also stutter, talk over the other person and repeat myself. A lot of times I realize these things are happening, lose my train of thought and then stop completing sentences completely.

Can I just stay home with my yarn for the rest of my life so I don’t have these kinds of encounters? KTHX.

Uh, it’s Friday?

Hi Kara,

I’ve been with my mom for most of the day today and I have to tell you that I forgot to make something up to post.

My mom got a treatment on her face to remove precancerous cells and I couldn’t be more proud of her for getting that procedure done. It’s painful, she will have a red face for two weeks, but it was so so necessary. Go mom! And wear sun screen y’all.

I also need to tell you that I failed miserably on my book challenge. I finished Furiously Happy (READ IT DAMN YOU) and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – and I’m about a chapter into the second book in the series. I forgot how creepy these books are. Probably why I’m so hesitant to start the second one. Anyways, huge fail. Why does life and other interests get in the way of reading? Plus, now I have Binge to read!

Okay, that’s all I’ve got for the night! Next week will be better I promise!

101 Update

I have a problem. My 101 list no longer reflects my wants or desires or needs the same way it did in September of last year. Let me go by sections:

7. Visit New York City : I don’t have the desire to visit New York City anymore. I don’t know what kick I was on at the time but I’m good.

12. Visit the aquarium Andrew is always going on about : This was going to be an easier task when Andrew’s dad lived in Santa Cruz but he doesn’t now and we really don’t have a reason to go anymore.

13. Travel on my own : I have zero desire to spend any time away from my future husband. This wouldn’t be fun because the only reason I would travel without him is for work. Bleh.

Self Care

23.  At least two no pants weekends a month for 12 months : I NEVER WEAR PANTS. The second I come home from work, I no longer have pants on. The second company leaves, my pants drop. I don’t have the patience to measure out this task.

24. Go a two weeks a year without makeup : I never wear makeup to work. I don’t wear it out unless I have to. I very rarely wear makeup. This no longer applies to me.

30. Have a pamper night once a month for 6 months : Once you see my bathtub, you will see how this doesn’t apply to me anymore.

Things to do (No $ Required)

38. Play the ground is lava for 12 hours : You called me out for this already, but like – this happens every Sunday.

40. Dance like an idiot in public : clearly, when I wrote this, I’d never seen myself in Disneyland before.

Things to Make

89. Learn to make 12 new cookies : No. For so many reasons.

I feel like I could remake this list a thousand times. What do I do Kara? Purge the ones that don’t fit anymore? Add new tasks? You tell me!

As of right now I have 31/101.

Perhaps we will fix this dreary situation WHEN I SEE YOU TONIGHT WHATTT.
